How to Import and Edit a MOGRT File in After Effects

Your step-by-step guide to working with motion graphics templates

Motion Graphics Templates, or MOGRT files, are powerful tools that allow editors to bring sleek, customizable animations into Adobe Premiere or After Effects. In this tutorial, we’ll walk you through how to import, edit, and export a MOGRT file in Adobe After Effects.

Step 1: Open Your MOGRT File in After Effects

Start by launching Adobe After Effects.

  1. Go to the top menu bar and click on File > Open Project.
  2. Navigate to the MOGRT file you want to work with.
  3. Select the file and click Open.

After Effects will prompt you to extract the contents of the MOGRT. This process essentially converts the MOGRT into a full After Effects project file with editable layers.

Step 2: Extract the MOGRT Contents

  1. Create a new folder where you’d like to store the extracted files.
  2. Name the folder something descriptive so you can easily find it later.
  3. Click Extract.

Once completed, After Effects will generate a new .aep (After Effects Project) file inside the folder you just created.

Step 3: Explore and Edit the Project in After Effects

Now that you’ve opened the project, you can begin customizing the template.

Make sure your Essential Graphics panel is visible. If it’s not:

  1. Go to Window in the top menu.
  2. Scroll down and enable Essential Graphics by clicking on it.

This panel is where you’ll find the editable components of your MOGRT, such as text fields, color swatches, and positioning controls.

Step 4: Export Your Edited MOGRT

  1. In the Essential Graphics panel, click Export Motion Graphics Template.
  2. Choose the location to save the new MOGRT file.

And that’s it! You’ve successfully imported, edited, and exported a MOGRT file using After Effects.

Wrap-Up

This process is ideal if you're working with pre-designed templates that need brand customization or creative tweaks. Whether you're refreshing lower thirds or building out reusable title sequences, understanding how to manipulate MOGRT files directly in After Effects gives you full creative control.
